Forever a Babe is the true story of a young boy who grew up in inner city Manchester, England, immediately after World War Two. It specifically concentrates on the period between the years of 1950–1958, when he was growing up alongside the emergence of Manchester United's young soccer team who went on to become affectionately known throughout the soccer world as the Busby Babes.
The story is a first hand account of not only their triumphs, but ultimately of their tragedy. It is told with passion, love, and insight, and describes the events that not only shaped his own life, but also had such a huge effect on the history of what has become the most famous soccer club in the world.
Tom Clare was born in April 1945 in the inner city suburb of Manchester named Chorlton upon Medlock, and lived there until April 1960. He was initially educated at the Holy Family Infants School; St Augustine’s Primary School; and finally, St. Gregory’s Technical High School in Ardwick, Manchester.
His love of Manchester United Football club was nurtured in his early years by his Grandfather. Tom left school in 1960 and pursued a career in the professional game serving for a few years on the ground staff at Preston North End. In April 1963 he left Preston and in August of that year, he enlisted into the armed forces where he was to spend the next 22 years.
This did not diminish his love of Manchester United and he travelled regularly to watch their games whenever the opportunity arose. On leaving the services in 1985 he once again settled in the Manchester area where he worked as a tenant in the licensed trade. He was a season ticket holder at Manchester United until 1999, when after watching his beloved club win an unprecedented ‘treble’ of Premiership, FA Cup, and Champions League trophies, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Houston, Texas.
His love of all things Manchester United is still as strong today as it has ever been, and he never wastes an opportunity to return to Manchester, and to Old Trafford in particular.
